“Art and Identity: The Museum of Modern Art”

Bobby Morrison
Field Trip #1

Project #3

Visiting the Museum of Modern Art I was capable to decide three works of arts. I have been able to embody the idea of individual identity, cultural identity, and embody the identity of a historical time. In this project I revealed how do these notions of identity differ between the works of art that I pick. In addition, what ways they overlap each other.
“Punch and Judy 2 Birth & Life & Sex & Death” is personal work of art made by Bruce Nauman. What makes this artwork personal is the fact it’s everyday process in life. Everyone goes through birth, life, sex and death. This artwork differs from the rest because it reveals all the personal events in life. “Punch and Judy 2 Birth & Life & Sex & Death” overlaps because the way the artist paint compiles on one another.
“The Jungle” is cultural artwork created by Wilfredo Lam. The reason why this is a cultural masterpiece is that the figures that look similar to faces were cultural marks of a group of individuals. What differ from this piece and the rest are mixture of color along with an environmental background.  How this overlaps is the figures are painted on to striated poles giving it a more realistic look.
“Does Andy Warhol Make You Cry?” is historical masterpiece developed by Lousie Lawler. This is historical because it’s a painting of Marilyn Monroe, a well-known American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol during the 1950s and early 1960s. This differs from cultural and personal because this woman was a historical icon in her time.  This overlaps majorly for the reason that it was a real people individual in the world today.
I choose these masterpieces for many reasons. Bruce Nauman,
“Punch and Judy 2 Birth & Life & Sex & Death” quickly made me connect to personal classification from my personal life.  Wifredo Lam, “The Jungle” remained me of cultural background where the Indian and Cuban would dress in the jungle.  Louise Lawler, “Does Andy Warhol Make You Cry?” made me remember the historical background of Marilyn Monroe in 1950s and 1960s.
